Alternating Deltoid Raise

How to perform

  1. 01In a standing position, hold a pair of dumbbells at your side.
  2. 02Keeping your elbows slightly bent, raise the weights directly in front of you to shoulder height, avoiding any swinging or cheating.
  3. 03Return the weights to your side.
  4. 04On the next repetition, raise the weights laterally, raising them out to your side to about shoulder height.
  5. 05Return the weights to the starting position and continue alternating to the front and side.

Form cues

  • Drive through the full range — do not cut the lockout short.
  • Control the lowering phase — that is where most of the growth stimulus lives.

Common mistakes

  • Using momentum instead of the target muscle.
  • Cutting the range of motion short to add load.
