Push Press - Behind the Neck

How to perform

  1. 01Standing with the weight racked on the back of the shoulders, begin with the dip. With your feet directly under your hips, flex the knees without moving the hips backward. Go down only slightly, and reverse direction as powerfully as possible. Drive through the heels create as much speed and force as possible, moving the bar in a vertical path.
  2. 02Using the momentum generated, finish pressing the weight overhead be extending through the arms.
  3. 03Return to the starting position, using your legs to absorb the impact.

Form cues

  • Brace your core before the first rep and keep it braced.
  • Drive through the full range — do not cut the lockout short.
  • Set the bar path over mid-foot and keep it there.
  • Control the lowering phase — that is where most of the growth stimulus lives.

Common mistakes

  • Using momentum instead of the target muscle.
  • Cutting the range of motion short to add load.
  • Adding weight before the movement pattern is clean.
